Gare de l'Est is one of the six great Paris stations, in the 10th arrondissement, five minutes' walk from Gare du Nord. Inaugurated in 1849 and extended several times, it is the French TGV East hub: Strasbourg (1h46), Reims (45 min), Nancy, Metz, Troyes, Mulhouse. It also handles TGV France-Germany services (ICE) to Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Munich, as well as connections to German-speaking Switzerland (Zürich, Basel) via Strasbourg. The main exit opens onto rue du 8 mai 1945 and place du 11 novembre 1918, two names that recall the railway history of this station, tied to the conflicts of the twentieth century.
Arriving at Gare de l'Est is simpler than at the giants Saint-Lazare or Gare du Nord: no customs (Schengen), a single main exit, short and clearly laid-out platforms.
