Gare de Lyon is France's third busiest station by passenger traffic (110 million passengers/year), after Saint-Lazare and Gare du Nord. Inaugurated in 1900 for the Universal Exhibition, it is crowned by a 67-metre clock tower — Europe's other « Big Ben ». It is the South-East TGV hub: to Lyon (1h57), Marseille (3h20), Avignon, Nice, Toulon, Montpellier, and beyond to Switzerland (Lyria: Geneva, Lausanne, Zurich, Basel) and Italy (Milan, Turin via Modane).
The internal organisation is dual: Hall 1 (main exit under the Tour de l'Horloge, parvis Louis-Armand) handles main-line TGVs; Hall 2 (Diderot exit) handles Transilien services, RER A and D, and OuiGo. Depending on your arrival, the chauffeur waits at one or the other — specify at booking.
