Gare d'Austerlitz is one of the six great Paris stations, in the 13th arrondissement on the Left Bank, facing the Charles-de-Gaulle bridge. Inaugurated in 1840 and topped by a magnificent historic glass roof, it is the head of the POLT line (Paris-Orléans-Limoges-Toulouse) and the Paris terminus for night Intercités: Briançon (Hautes-Alpes), Latour-de-Carol (Catalan Pyrenees), Cerbère (Mediterranean), Albi-Rodez. These night trains, long under threat, have found their audience again since 2020 with their ecological dimension and retro charm.
Arriving at Austerlitz has a rare particularity: a good half of the trains arrive early in the morning (night Intercités pulling in between 5.45am and 7.30am). For the traveller stepping off a sleeper carriage with half a night's rest and altitude luggage (skis, snowboards, hiking gear), finding an available taxi at that hour is unpredictable.
